Best for Culture - Expert review of York Castle Museum
A knock-out museum that’s surely one of the best in the UK if not Europe, where the continual chorus of “I remember that” or “We had one of them” can be heard ringing out from many of its galleries. This is home too of ‘Kirkgate,’ the recreated and enclosed Victorian street open for business and offering a charming amble through the shops and services of York as it was 150 years ago.
Also here are Civil and Second World War galleries and actual, in-situ prison cells including the one where Dick Turpin spent his last night before hanging.
Adults £8.50, concessions £7.50, children under 16 free. Wheelchair users accompanied by one carer are also free.
Keep your ticket once entry has been paid and you can then return to the museum as many times as you like over the following 12 months.
The York Museums Trust Pass includes entry here and to the Yorkshire Museum; adults £13, concessions £11, children under 16 free. Accepts Yorkshire Pass (See the Sights and attractions section on my York insider tips page for more details).
