Expert review of Hiking on Mount Biokovo
I love the sea, but I love the mountains too. Mount Biokovo, rising behind the seaside town of Makarska, 67km southeast of Split, is home to Dalmatia’s third highest peak, Sveti Jure (1760m). Spend a day here hiking and you won’t be disappointed. As you work your way up through this barren rocky karst landscape, you get evermore stunning views over the sea and islands - on a clear day you can see Italy across the water and Bosnia Herzegovina when looking inland from the top. Be sure to bring a camera, and keep an eye open for chamois goats and mouflon sheep, some of the rare hardy mammals that can survive on these scanty pastures. To join an organised group trek, contact Biokovo Active Holidays. They also arrange sunrise and sunset trips to Sveti Jure by minibus, with a one-hour gentle walk included. And they offer mountain biking on Biokovo too.
Expect to pay 270-350 kunas for a half-day or one-day hiking trip with Biokovo Active Holidays.
