Expert review of Masca
A hidden paradise known as Tenerife's Shangri-La.
This is a tiny hamlet tucked into the folds of the 7-million-year-old Teno Mountains. The white knuckle drive down the mountain affords breathtaking views and once in the village, a small museum chronicles life in the hamlet over the past 500 years.
Like many people, I enjoy the three-hour hike down the Masca barranco (ravine) to the beach where a boat collects hikers and takes them back to Los Gigantes.
Price advice:
Entrance to the museum is 1.50 euros. The boat from Masca beach to Los Gigantes is 10 euros.
Expert tips:
Avoid 11am-3pm when the jeep safaris descend on the hamlet en masse.
To avoid the crowds go on a Friday, there are no tour buses that day.
Streets are very steep and cobbled, so sensible footwear is essential.
