Best for History - Expert review of Istanbul Archaeological Museums
Rich collection of classical and pre-classical antiquities from Turkey and the region.
Set in a peaceful part of the Topkapı Palace grounds, this complex of museums is rich with archaeological finds representing Babylonian, Persian, Anatolian, Egyptian, and other cultures. The impressive collection is not always well-labelled, unfortunately, but keep an eye out for the magnificent sarcophagi from Sidon (in modern-day Lebanon) and the world’s oldest peace treaty. The Tiled Pavilion holds a beautiful assortment of Turkish ceramics.
Price advice:
Regular admission is 10 lira.
Expert tips:
Kids can check out ancient Greek and Roman toys, and play inside a model Trojan horse, in the new Children’s Museum.
