Expert review of St James Beach
One of Cape Town's loveliest and most charming beaches.
My stepdaughters call this ‘swimming pool beach’ and the big rectangular tidal pool really does look like a swimming pool (in fact the local school uses it for sports lessons). This is one of my locals. I love it because it’s big enough to have a proper swim - because if truth be told I’m a bit scared of the open ocean - and because on a still and windless day, no beach is as charming. It’s traditionally a family beach because it’s so safe and the 7am weekend show sees parents galore with their offspring. The colourful beach huts add to the bygone era charm.
Expert tips:
I always think the best way to get here is to park at Muizenberg beach and to walk the 1km to the beach – your reward is a refreshing swim.
There’s a small station kiosk selling refreshments nearby.
