Expert review of Fish Hoek Beach
This lovely beach is sheltered with shallow waters for splashing about in.
As you come around the corner from Kalk Bay be prepared to be impressed. Fish Hoek (‘Fish Corner’) is a tranquil bay that on peaceful days looks like it belongs on the Amalfi Coast. I love this beach - the water’s calm and much warmer than the beaches on the other side of the Peninsula, the beach is long and flat which makes it perfect for running or walking and there’s a genteel boardwalk should sitting on the sand not be to one’s taste. What I like the most though is the old school beach café where a plate of fish and chips costs next to nothing and the soft-serve ice-creams are enormous and taste like they did when I was six. This is an unpretentious beach that’s perfect for families.
Expert tips:
You need to know that there have been two fatal shark attacks here over the past few years. Look out for the shark spotters’ flags signalling whether it is safe to swim and don’t swim beyond the swimmers’ buoys.
Take a stroll along Jaeger Walk and soak up the scenery from any of the benches dotted along it.
