Grab an ice-cream, sink into a deckchair and enjoy some seaside nostalgia.
A dozen bandstands graced the parks and promenades of Brighton and Hove in Victorian times, but they fell out of favour in the 1960s when traffic noise began to drown out the music. The Kings Road Bandstand, sometimes called The Birdcage because of its delicate ironwork, is the sole survivor, and quite a treasure. After years of neglect, it was rescued by energetic local heritage enthusiasts and carefully restored.
It now hosts free Sunday afternoon concerts featuring anything from brass ensembles to steel drums - a fine addition to any jolly day out - and there’s a café on the lower level. It’s also licensed for weddings.
