Expert review of Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church
One of Berlin’s most famous landmarks, the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church stands as a reminder of the destructive powers of war. The former church on this site was a massive red sandstone construction that opened in 1895 as a memorial to Kaiser Wilhelm II. It was almost completely destroyed by Allied bombing in 1945, with the exception of a few walls and part of the bell tower. The ruins have been left on the site as a reminder of the devastation of the Second World War. In 1961, a new, smaller church was built at the base of the ruins. The church’s modern, geometrical design includes the Memorial Hall and a small museum documenting the history of the original church.
