Expert review of Hermitage Amsterdam
Hermitage Amsterdam occupies the Amstelhof, a 17th-century old people's home alongside the Amstel river. The austere building has recently been converted at great expense into impressive exhibition spaces for dazzling treasures on temporary loan from the vast collections of Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg. Each exhibition lasts for around six months. I've seen the first two - on imperial life at the Russian court, and on the museum's early modern art - and both were fantastic. The current exhibition, which runs until 18 March 2011, is on Alexander the Great. Allow a good couple of hours to do the exhibition justice. From 19 March to 16 September, a new exhibition displays religious artefacts related to the Russian Orthodox church.
General admission is 15 euros; I amsterdam Card holders 3 euros; children under 17 and Museumkaart holders, free.
