Best for Value for money - Expert review of La Palanca
La Palanca is primarily a friendly neighbourhood bar, and outside lunch hour it returns to its core business. For a couple of hours in the middle of the day, however, it becomes one of my very favourite places to grab some surprisingly good food.
What hits the few tables between noon and 2.30pm is high-quality cooking with a fishy slant and a gourmet touch here and there. The seafood antipasto couldn’t be fresher and is big enough for two, the inky squid risotto is excellent and the grilled tuna with balsamic vinegar a treat. I always try to leave room for the chocolate mousse with candied fruit.
Loud with bantering locals and remarkably welcoming.
Very friendly.
On the long Venice-facing fondamenta (canal-side walk) on the Giudecca island. There are a few tables inside, but I always try to grab one on the fondamenta outside, with magnificent views across to the Zattere on the far side of the Giudecca canal.
At about 30 euros a head for a three-course meal, this is true value.
Outside on the fondamenta.
