Fantastic views and a laid-back ambience in this restaurant with cuisine from around Italy.

A minimal-chic wainscotted interior with comfy leather sofas in the lobby, décor in creams and browns and some cool vibes on the sound system set the tone for this smart new-ish restaurant on the Giudecca island with pavement tables looking across the water to St Mark’s.

Food and drink: 

A team from Venice, Rome and the southern Puglia region runs I Figli delle Stelle (children of the stars) and this variety is reflected in the cooking – something which, after a few days of solid Venetian cuisine, I find a pleasant diversion. Beside local favourites such as pesce in saor (fish in a sweet and sour sauce) and bigoli in salsa (fat spaghetti in anchovy sauce) you may find Puglian specialities such as broad bean purée with pan-tossed greens and saltimbocca alla romana (strips of veal pan-fried with sage) on a menu which changes with the seasons. An interesting wine list is similarly pan-Italian. The lobby is a very amenable place to enjoy an aperitivo or nightcap.

Ambience: 

Laid-back, young-ish and casually elegant. You’ll find some Venetians here, usually outnumbered by style-conscious visitors.

Service: 

Generally competent though a laid-back air can verge on the smug at times.

Location: 

Near the Zitelle vaporetto stop on the Giudecca island, with outside tables offering a breath-taking view across the water to the Doge’s Palace and St Mark’s.

Price advice: 

Prices are on the high side but you’re paying for the general stylishness of the place. A full meal without wine will cost around €45.
