The fabulously eccentric offering at Oddfellows is backed up with high-quality food.

A sexy beast of a building, this is a locals’ favourite. But it’s not the exclusive domain of Chester-ites: footballer Michael Owen, Davina McCall, presenter Nick Knowles, Ainsley Harriot (who announced his toilet activities to the men’s room), Masterchef presenter Gregg Wallace being unwell in the bathroom sinks, even Daniel Craig’s mum - just a few of the recent celebrity spottings at Oddfellows.

Food and drink: 

I don’t feel like the food ever lives up to the fabulously stylish surroundings of the Pantry or the Brasserie. It’s very good, very, very good in fact – but it needs just a little extra to make it as amazing as the venue. I do like the fact that the menu is (mostly) in plain speak: poached smoked haddock and bubble and squeak, free range chicken breast, summer fruits in pink Champagne jelly – though I’m jiggered if I know why the crushed peas that accompany the fish and chips are any different to mushy peas...but I’m no chef.

Ambience: 

Stylish locals love Oddfellows and you’d do best to book on buzzing Friday and Saturday nights. I love the giant lamps that act as tables, alfresco pool-side dining (when the weather permits) and the Bedouin tents out back.

Service: 

I have to say service is hit and miss. When they’re good they’re very, very good but when they are bad they’re lethargic.

Location: 

Lower Bridge Street isn’t the prettiest, but it is central and parking out front is on-street.

Price advice: 

There are specials on throughout the year (check the website or call), though the a la carte is quite reasonable (main around £14). Sunday lunch is more of a budget treat with two courses for £12.95 or three for £14.95 (noon until 9pm).
