Best for Value for money - Expert review of Snackbar Bird
This little Amsterdam institution is the busiest of the many ethnic places to eat on the once seedy, now spruced up Zeedijk. Though cramped, noisy, hot and basic, I love it - it's always near the top of my list of places if I'm after a quick, inexpensive but delicious plate (or bowl) of food.
My favourites include coconut soup with chicken, the fried fishcakes, and bowls of Pad Thai. The tea is free, no alcohol is served (and soft drinks come in cans).
Always lots going on - with ladies working dexterously preparing food in the tiny open kitchen, people waiting for takeaways (and tables), policemen on their beat popping in.
Staff are very efficient and friendly.
In the city centre, on the Zeedijk. Seats in the window are great for people watching.
Coconut soup with chicken 4.5 euros; Pad Thai 10 euros.
The Bird restaurant across the street is comfier, serves much the same fare for a few euros more (and alcohol), but has none of the atmosphere.
