Expert review of Café de Reiger
The Dutch use the word "gezellig" to sum up a place with a laid-back, cosy vibe - and gezellig perfectly describes the de Reiger. It's probably my favourite Amsterdam eetcafé (an eetcafé is a Dutch version of a food-oriented pub). It's always packed with locals, and no reservations are accepted - so be prepared to wait a bit at the bar for a table to become free.
Choose from robust, no-nonsense dishes such as thick steaks served with good chips and mayo and simply grilled fish, as well as some more creative offerings - perhaps goat's cheese soufflé or risotto with leg of lamb - posted up on blackboards. Sparkling and dessert wines are offered by the glass. Puddings might include a lemon cheesecake, or parfait of sweet chestnuts.
The main dining area is a simple but attractive room, with bare wood floors and tables, and mustard-coloured walls. You reach it through a narrow bar area, where drinkers hang out round a beautiful long, low-slung, candlelit bar. Most diners are regular locals.
Informal but solicitous. The last time I ate here, when I asked to have the blackboard specials translated, the waitress pulled up a stool at my table to run through them.
On a backstreet in the Jordaan.
Around 35 euros a head for a full three-course meal, excluding drinks. Main courses are around 17-21 euros.
