Read full expert reviewBerlin’s hotel scene is as varied and broad as you’d expect from such a popular, well-visited European capital. You can find five-star corporate hotels and intimate boutiques, art-house luxe projects and plenty of cheap and cheerful backpackers, plus a lot more in between.
Things To Consider Before Booking:
Location
Berlin is a city of two halves - and of two centres. You can travel between East and West easily enough, but in essence people tend to stay closer to their hotel more often than not, for reasons of cost and convenience. Therefore if you are planning to spend most of your time in West Berlin, choose a hotel there, and vice versa. While most of the hotels are based out West, there are enough in the eastern part of the city to give a decent amount of choice these days.
Weekend deals
In the kind of hotels that depend on weekday business trade, you can get some superb deals if you're only staying for the weekend.
Parking, extras and VAT
It's worth noting that not all hotels in Berlin have parking facilities, and when they do, there will often be an extra charge. Also check that extras like internet and breakfast are included, since sometimes they're not. Unlike London, any taxes are often included in the price, but again it's best to read the small print or ask directly.
It’s a challenge to recommend a relative handful of hotels when there are so many options, but previous experience compiling guidebooks and articles on Berlin, as well as recommending hotels consistently to friends and visitors to the city, has enabled me to visit many of the city's accommodation spots and filter some of the good from the bad.
There are many famous hotels in Berlin, and many exclusive ones too. But in the spirit of this diverse city (and in particular its huge variety of visitors), I’ve attempted to find a good spread of options from the deservedly well known to the unfairly obscure - from hotels with a design-ethic-to-die-for to unpretentious places that make you feel completely at home.
I’ve tried to cover a decent price range as well as a good geographical spread across the city, so there should be something for most visitors here. If I have missed anything out that you feel I really should know about or include, do get in touch. I’m always happy to discover new places or have my mind changed about existing ones.
The hotels section will be updated on a regular basis and we will add new spots as they appear on the scene. If for some reason you don’t find anything suitable, be sure to check back and see what’s fresh, or feel free to contact me to see what else is on the horizon. Berlin is one of the fastest-changing cities in Europe after all.
