Best for Luxury - Expert review of Hotel Puente Romano
My favourite beachside hotel is a byword for discreet glamour, luxury and world-class service.
With its whitewashed walls, the complex bears something of a resemblance to a typical Andalucian town. Although it is a large hotel, the unusual, sprawling layout of the rooms - they are split into alphabetical zones, and surrounded by gardens - means you never feel on top of your fellow guests, and you get lots of privacy.
Prince Alfonso Von Hohenlohe founded the hotel and since then, it has been a stalwart on the Marbella social scene. Now owned by the Shamoon family, no expense has been spared on the recent renovations.
At night I love, the ancient Roman Bridge and the 55,000 square-metre subtropical gardens are beautifully lit by hundreds of discreet lights. Follow the scent of the jasmine trees down to the beach club, Suite.
Location:
In heart of the Golden Mile, a top-end residential district between Marbella town centre and Puerto Banus, the hotel is a five minute drive to either resort. If you value a good night’s sleep, you’ll be glad you chose this hotel rather than one in the traffic-clogged Marbella or Puerto Banus with its buzzing nightlife.
Bedrooms:
Originally built as private apartments, the 285 spacious rooms - including 82 luxury suites - are of classic design. Decorated in neutral colours, they all come with balconies or terraces, and while only two blocks offer views of the Mediterranean, the others look out onto the beautiful gardens. The suites are all really well appointed with loads of space. I particularly love the Imperial, Royal and Presidential suites, which must be some of the grandest, most comfortable in Spain... and with a price to match.

Public areas:
By far the most interesting part of the hotel has to be the fabulous Roman bridge, which sits in the heart of the grounds. It was once part of the important Roman road, Via Augusta, which connected Rome to Cadiz. In the grounds, you will also find three outdoor pools, a beach club, a tennis facility and a gym, and there is a kids' club during the holidays. There are also a number of conference rooms including a grand ballroom that can hold up to 650 guests, making it the ideal location for business trips.
Eating and drinking:
The hotel offers a wide selection of restaurants and bars - from the Roberto restaurant serving Italian and Mediterranean cuisine, to the beautifully situated Chiringuito/Suite del Mar which is open during the summer months and transforms at sunset from a beach restaurant into a club with international DJs.
Leisure facilities:
There is a fantastic tennis facility, one of the best I have seen in southern Spain, by virtue of the fact that it was once managed by Bjorn Borg, who actually got married at the hotel. There is also a great fitness suite with classes and a personal trainer upon request, a nearby golf course, three outdoor pools, and guests are invited to use the Thalasso Spa at the nearby Marbella Club Hotel.

Who stays there:
Over the years everyone from royalty to rock stars. It’s popular with honeymooners and those want to experience that famous ‘old-money’ appeal of Marbella. If you want brash, modern-Marbella, this is not for you.
Price advice:
Discounts do happen - but rarely. But this is the kind of place one wouldn't discuss things as vulgar as money!
Pros:
Go for the amazing suites overlooking the sea if money is no object
