The Venetian's little sibling has all the swagger of the original, minus the themed atmosphere.
What do you do when you open a successful hotel in Vegas? Open another one. That's the thinking behind the Palazzo, which opened in 2008 as a sister property to the Venetian next door. Rooms are identical to the Venetian's and the standard is the same - but the Palazzo isn't themed, and it's a lot less busy. It lends itself to business, too, with the finesse of any grand hotel but no pesky theme to bring down the tone.
Location:
Next to the Venetian, opposite Treasure Island, a 10-minute walk to Caesars.
Bedrooms:
Identical to the Venetian's, except they seem slightly newer: canopied beds, a sunken living room in all but the disabled rooms, a business station at the desk and fully marbled bathrooms (there are proper TVs in the bathrooms, too, rather than miniature ones in the mirror). The overall effect is very elegant, and as they're all the same, you can book an entry level room knowing exactly what you'll get. Which, in this town, is a God-send.

Public areas:
The casino at the Palazzo is one of my favourites in Vegas - it's spaced out nicely so you don't feel cramped with wide walkways and clear signage making it one of the few places I haven't felt claustrophobic in. All the public areas are smart without being over the top - from the beautiful sculpture in the atrium lobby to the giant waterfall in the hallway connecting the Palazzo to the Venetian, which is fast becoming one of Vegas' top spots for photos.
Eating and drinking:
A huge range. For a start, it's connected to the Venetian so its restaurants are easy to get to, but it also has some good ones of its own. Lavo is an Italian restaurant that doubles as a nightclub and is hugely trendy; Dos Caminos is an extravagant Mexican restaurant (the food is good but you're paying for the lavish surroundings); Grand Lux Cafe caters for the slightly less-loaded brigade; and First Food & Bar is one of my favourite restaurants in Vegas. It's expensive but has an extensive menu of modern American cuisine, excellent cocktails and offers spectacular views of the Strip, from Treasure Island to the Wynn.
The Laguna Champagne bar is good for a late drink, although it's in the middle of the casino so you feel slightly exposed.
Leisure facilities:
The general pool area is fairly big, but if you can afford the entry fee (US$30 upwards), do make it into Azure - a private pool club with three pools, DJs and zero attitude. Along with Liquid at Aria, it's my favourite pool party.
Canyon Ranch Spa, shared with the Venetian, is top notch - it even has its own rock-climbing wall!
Service:
More laid back than the Venetian but it's good and thorough.
