Expert review of New York New York Hotel & Casino
With its towering Statue of Liberty marking the start of the Las Vegas Strip proper, New York New York’s another of those iconic Vegas hotels. And although I felt at first it was a bit of a shame to pretend you’re in New York when you’re in Vegas, the minute I set foot in the casino, I changed my mind. It’s a hotel with a great mix of people and a fantastic sense of humour – from the ads making fun of New York stereotypes to ‘Vinny’, their resident Brooklynite, who doubles as a concierge and hotel mascot. If you’re looking for laid-back fun, this could be the place.
At the start of the Strip proper, so it’s pretty much as far south as you want to be. Walking to Caesars will take about half an hour, but at least there's plenty to see on the way.
Nothing to write home about but they're not bad. Like most of the traditional Vegas hotels, the entry level rooms (called skyline rooms) aren't great - dark, with mottled carpets and little in the way of decor. If I was going to splurge on a suite, I wouldn't do it here either. But they're all well priced, and the casino's so much fun that I can forgive a lot when it comes to the rooms.

I love the casino – the big central area is lofty and modern-looking, with glittery tiles and metallic accents, and it’s hardly ever full. As a non-gambler, what I love even more is the Coney Island-style arcade upstairs with the kind of coconut shy-style games you used to play as a child. And the outside, complete with Empire State Building, Brooklyn Bridge and a rollercoaster wrapping its way around the whole thing, never fails to bring out the kid in me.
One of my favourite spots in Vegas for a bite to eat with internet on the side, the ESPN Zone, closed down this summer, but there are still options in NYNY, like Gallagher's Steakhouse. To be honest, though, most people eat out – a popular choice seems to be Excalibur’s all day buffet, just across the road on Tropicana, and I'd pick Fatburger across the Strip from the casino over Nathan's (inside) any day.
The pool’s no great shakes but there’s a spa. And, of course, the main draw is the rollercoaster draped around the building. I’ve never dared try it out.
Informal and friendly. If you ask for advice from ‘Vinny’, he’ll give you the full Brooklyn geezer impression.
