Expert review of The Mirage
The perfect mix of themed hotel and chic retreat.
The Mirage is a fantastic combination of chic and themed Vegas. It has just enough odd stuff to keep me entertained (an erupting “volcano” on the Strip, for example, and an aquarium behind the check in desk) but it’s also as smart as the top-end, unthemed hotels, making it a great all-rounder. It’s also gay-friendly with regular LGBT nights and pool parties. I love this place.
Location:
Just north of Caesars in the central part of the Strip. It’s a great location, and you can walk to most places from here, although be warned – you’re staying on the busiest part of the Strip.
Bedrooms:
Hooray for a (slightly) themed hotel whose rooms are all of a great standard! Great value, too - even the entry level rooms (refurbished in 2008) at the Mirage are a joy. They’re furnished in bright colours (they’re called “Ruby” or “Citrus” rooms) with flatscreen TVs, wooden headboards, and ergonomic mattresses. Get one with a Strip view, overlooking the Venetian, and you’ll be sorted.

Public areas:
Beautiful. The casino’s a bit dark and low-ceilinged for me, but I can forgive it that, thanks to the central atrium – a huge glass dome with rainforest-style shrubbery and a waterfall underneath it – and the lush garden out on the front of the Strip. Said garden even houses a “volcano” which erupts every hour once dusk falls, and in the daytime, there’s a waterfall to hold your attention.
Eating and drinking:
There’s a fantastic New York-style deli, Carnegie’s, and although it’s pricey, portions are huge (the cheesecake is legendary, and I always get the chicken soup). BLT Burger is extremely popular (try the alcohol-laced milkshakes) although personally I prefer KGB over at Harrah’s. STACK, a posh American food joint is popular but, I think, overpriced – if you want to splash out here, I’d go for Japonais, (unsurprisingly) a Japanese restaurant which backs onto the atrium, so it feels like you’re eating in a tropical garden.
For drinks, try Revolution, the 60s-themed bar. Most people who see LOVE (Cirque du Soleil’s Beatles tribute) end up here after the show, and on Sundays it’s home to popular gay night, Closet Sundays.
Leisure facilities:
The main pool is huge and swathed in undergrowth, and there’s also Bare – an adults only, topless pool that’s less sleazy than some of the others and hosts an extremely popular gay party, Heaven, on Saturday nights. Jet, the inhouse nightclub, is extremely popular.
There’s also a spa, salon and even an inhouse tattoo parlour, King Ink, owned by celeb tattoo artist Mario Barth, while kids will love Siegfried and Roy’s Secret Garden menagerie of tigers, lions and dolphins.
Service:
Pretty informal but it’s of a decent standard.

Who stays there:
Mainly couples and groups of well-heeled younger people, although with the Secret Garden and the volcano on site, and Treasure Island’s live pirate show next door, it’s also a good, if underrated, bet for families.
Price advice:
A daily resort fee of US$15.
