Best for Food - Expert review of Mandalay Bay Resort And Casino
The huge Mandalay Bay hotel – along with its posher sister property, THEhotel at Mandalay Bay – may sit south of the Strip proper, but what it lacks in ease of access, it makes up for with facilities, eating possibilities and a good selection of rooms. As long as you factor in taxi fares, this is a great bet.
South of the Strip proper, just below the Luxor. It’s not ideal – you might need to get taxis to the centre Strip, unless you’re a fan of walking.
They’re all pretty decent. The standard rooms (called “deluxe”) aren’t the best designed in Vegas, but they’re all comfortable and clean, and the spa suites and 750 GR rooms (GR - great rooms) are slick with neutral and beige palettes.

I like the casino a lot – it’s big without being overwhelming (as MGM Grand can be) and there’s lots to take in - whether restaurant menus to study or shops to try out (I love the Mandalay Place shops – there’s a good mix of affordable shops and restaurants, including Lush and Urban Outfitters).
It’s celeb chef central here: Aureole is owned by Charlie Palmer, Lupo by Wolfgang Puck, and RM Seafood by Rick Moonen (the latter is fantastic and all the food is sustainable). There are two brilliant Mexican restaurants too: Border Grill is fairly upscale, while Hussong’s Cantina is one of my favourite restaurants in Vegas – laid-back, delicious food and pretty exceptional prices for Vegas. For drinks, try House of Blues (their Sunday Gospel Brunch is exactly as it sounds – brunch to the sound of a gospel choir) or Minus 5 Ice Bar, where you get dressed up in furs and drink in a bar made entirely of ice.
As well as the shops at Mandalay Place, I’m a big fan of the pool – or Mandalay Bay Beach, as it’s called. There’s 11 acres of it, and it’s the only place I’ve been to in Vegas that has real sand around the pool. They have concerts by the pool during the summer months, which can be great fun.
It’s a big hotel but the service doesn’t seem to suffer. Everyone I’ve come across is friendly.
