Expert review of Luxor
Staying at this Strip institution is a Vegas rite of passage for first-timers.
If the Luxor is anything like as iconic for you as it is for me, you’ll want to stay there – whether or not it’s the best value for your price range. Although I think you’ll find a lot nicer rooms in other hotels, there’s something nostalgic about staying in the Pyramid – and I’m fond enough of the casino and its lively scene to let the details of the rooms slip.
Location:
On the southern end of the Strip, just below Excalibur. It’s not ideal, but it’s just walkable to the central Strip. You’ll probably end up taking taxis in the long run, though.
Bedrooms:
My least favourite part of the Luxor. Several friends of mine have stayed in the Pyramid rooms (in fact, they appear to be a rite of passage for most young people on their first trip to Vegas) and tell me that, although they’re tired, they’re passable.
When I stayed, I got an unexpected, impromptu upgrade to a suite in the East Tower – supposedly more swanky. But although I had high hopes, I was disappointed – the room felt grubby and the furnishings were old. I think this is one place where it’s only worth getting a cheap room, to say you’ve stayed there – if you want something fancier, then you should look elsewhere rather than upgrading here.

Public areas:
Dark as it is, I’m deeply fond of the Luxor casino. The front entrance is Vegas at its most extraordinary: Fake Egyptian statues standing 30ft high, huge palm trees, a brightly-lit escalator and the huge pyramid – with rooms running off it – sloping upwards ahead of you. The casino floor has been refurbished and is a kind of slate grey – it’s a pretty good size. I don’t hang around here, as I don’t gamble, but it looks good, and the vibe is, as they say here, popping - it's a fun, young crowd.
Eating and drinking:
The buffet isn’t great but it’s popular because of its US$29.99 all day deal. Mexican joint Tacos & Tequila has great views of the Pyramid, but I don’t rate the food – I’d go over to Hussong’s Cantina at Mandalay Place any time.
Leisure facilities:
The pool’s pretty fun, divided into different areas, though LAX nightclub isn’t somewhere I hang out (the crowd’s young and backpacker-ish, like the Luxor’s clientele). For something a bit more upmarket, try CatHouse, which was transformed summer 2010 from a restaurant to a nightlife venue with lingerie-clad dancers tucked away behind glass as you party.
Service:
Perfunctory but nothing to complain about. Watch out for long taxi lines at weekends.

Mainly under 30s – groups or couples - and Vegas first timers. The same goes for who visits.
