Best for Value for money - Expert review of Hotel Kong Arthur
A cosily stylish and welcoming four-star treasure just north of the centre.
Maybe it's the fact that the Kong Arthur is part of a small family-owned group that makes it such a welcoming place. Whatever the reason, I found much to love about it - from the elegant and comfortable rooms to the terrific service. It's one of my top five Copenhagen hotels.
Location:
A five-minute walk from Norrebro station, the Kong Arthur may not be the most central but it is still within easy walking distance of the city centre (less than ten minutes). It's in an attractive corner of town overlooking the canal and ideal for walking, running or cycling around.
Bedrooms:
Elegantly finished in muted earth tones and duck egg blues, I felt very at home in my standard double room. While it wasn't huge, I really liked the stylish and homely finishing touches from the line drawings on the wall and the classic design chair, to the cosy sofa and the fleecy throw in a wicker basket.
The design struck the right balance feeling light and modern but not out of place with the venerable Kong Arthur's century-old roots. The only very slightly off note was the bathroom. It was smart and clean but the tiles were a bit stark in the manner of a municipal swimming pool. Tea making facilities and a flat screen TV together with fast broadband access were all good.
Most of the rooms face the courtyard. Some travellers have said this leads to noise in the summer when they leave their windows open (on account of the absence of air-conditioning). For almost all of the year, however, this just isn't going to be an issue.

Public areas:
The spacious lounge and bar area winked with tealights and a flickering fire, throwing out autumnal cosiness when I last stayed. Wall mounted shields and a suit of armour added an engaging element of olde worlde kitsch. Breakfast is in a light and airy atrium or, in warm weather, in the smallish courtyard. There's free WiFi in the public areas.
Eating and drinking:
There's no restaurant here (although the Italian restaurant La Rocca is just next door and there are plenty of other eating and drinking options nearby). The staff will happily rustle up cold meat and cheese platters though and the bowls of fresh apples on offer at the bar were a nice, generous touch. The bar is excellent with a handful of interesting wines and local micro brewed beers on tap. The breakfast is worth the 150kr, with a good spread that included hot bacon and eggs, pancakes, fresh fruit and tasty fruit smoothies.
Leisure facilities:
The attached Helle Thorup spa's sauna and hot tubs are free to guests. There's also an impressive range of spa treatments. There's no pool, although the shores of the nearby canals make ideal jogging trails.
Service:
Every single interaction I had with the staff here impressed me from check in to check out. Frederik, who was ably juggling the front desk and the bar drew me a micro brewery/cocktail bar map of the city and was a friendly mine of information. They seem to hire good people here and it makes a big difference to your guest experience.

Who stays there:
Business travellers are the main clientele here but the cosy, relaxing and quiet atmosphere, personal service and quality spa mean it would work really well for couples looking for a romantic weekend too.
Price advice:
You're likely to get a better deal at weekends when the business travellers have left, ditto for the August summer holidays.
