Expert review of Hotel D'Angleterre
Not quite Copenhagen's best hotel.
Oh dear, the grand dame's tiara has slipped a bit. For years voted Copenhagen's best hotel, things have changed and the D'Angleterre no longer claims top spot. The arrival of tiny sleek Nimb Hotel didn't help, but the D'Angleterre has been falling short of its own high standards lately.
Location:
While the location near the shops, in the middle of the city and close to busy little Nyhavn can't be beat, there are problems. The interminable work building a new metro station going on in the square right outside the D'Angleterre doesn't make a great first impression, and it is set to blight the area for a long time yet.
Bedrooms:
The suites and deluxe rooms are lavishly appointed, very well equipped and offer undeniable drama and old fashioned style. Some travellers on Tripadvisor have complained that their rooms were tired and run down. I didn't see any of this on my last visit (some of the room categories were full) but if it's true, it is unforgiveable for a hotel in this bracket and charging these prices.

Public areas:
The public areas, including the bar/lounge are cosy and plush. Just what you'd expect for a hotel of this calibre.
Eating and drinking:
The D'Angletere's restaurant has a well justified reputation for being among the best in town. I found the bar menu a tad uninspired however. I was also disappointed that a hotel of this calibre - and with this name in particular - doesn't offer any kind of classic English Afternoon Tea eating option.
Leisure facilities:
The spa with pool and gym is fantastic.
Service:
On my most recent visit I found the service rather wanting, which is very disappointing for such a high-end hotel. The staff seemed harried, stressed and lacked warmth. I felt like my questions and requests were a nuisance to them. Is there an under-staffing issue here?
