The stadium’s next door neighbour.
It’s difficult not to notice the Holiday Inn. By day it proudly sits next door to an eye-catching stadium, river and park. By night it’s coated in a cool lime green glow that glistens on the river behind. I picked this because its location and views are a little different to other city centre hotels and it’s also blessed with ample parking.
Location:
This is by far the hotel’s strongest asset. The most westerly part of the city centre, it’s right next door to the Millennium Stadium, almost on top of the stately River Taff, and the castle and its wonderfully sprawling park is over the road. Cricket fans will find the Swalec Stadium in minutes in one direction while shoppers, boozers and foodies will find satisfaction in the other. The five minutes spent walking from the train station ensures a more peaceful stay too.
Bedrooms:
You might have to walk along dull, characterless corridors to get to them, but recently refurbished rooms are large and blessed with massive beds and new flat screen TVs that allow you to interact with the hotel and tailor your stay and requests such as choice of different pillows! The family room is an impressive size too, with the extra bed being a bit more substantial than a pull out settee. The bathrooms are more than adequate, and the curved shower rail is a thoughtful way of avoiding that nasty shower curtain rub you can get in other hotel showers.

Public areas:
I like the open plan feel of the reception area, the bar and seating area is set far enough into the background not to be over facing but still adds atmosphere. There’s also an abundance of light from the generous windows. The business centre is effectively situated on its own separate floor so as not to affect or disturb the guest’s stay.
Eating and drinking:
The restaurant and bar serve a reasonable range of dishes from traditional British tucker and bar food to a good selection of curries. With grand windows looking directly at the castle wall and dramatic trees that hang over it, it’s a cool spot day and a more subdued, classier spot in the evening. For something a little livelier head to Callaghan’s Sports Bar, the hotel’s own boozer that attracts its own local following.

Parking is £10 for 24 hours in the hotel’s own car park, Wifi is £15 a day (although they claim it’s the fasted hotel internet in the city) and there’s a £5 deal with the Vitality Gym across the centre.
